Coca-Cola Disses Zeta Tau Alpha in Competition

Yeah, it’s getting posted. Here’s the original (that I found): http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5g0CiyQnstLPTPGAIas816aHbqqCQD9E42R581

Here’s a video:

And here’s the background. Coca-Cola (Sprite specifically) is running a step competition for scholarship money, which is named “Sprite Step Off”. After the scoring was done and the competition was “stepped out”, the top three were decided. Zeta Tau Alpha (an all white step team in the competition) placed first. After the winners were announced, the community at this competition profusely boo’d the team – and many people stated that they should not be allowed to win due to their skin color (I have no sources to say this was in person, so I’m going off of the comments on YouTube, etc). At the end of the event they decided that ZTA should share their prize money with the runner up.

“Had this happened to a black sorority in a predominantly white competition, it would be all over CNN and Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would be hyperventilating.” writes Jemele Hill from ESPN. She also adds: “Coca-Cola would never admit it, and the AKAs and Zetas are too gracious to even go there, but surely the results of the competition were changed because there were a whole lot of people who couldn’t handle the fact that a white sorority won a competition that African-American groups were supposed to dominate.” Now there’s a writer that knows what I’m talking about, and summed it up a lot better than I ever could.

Personally, due to this event in it’s entirely I for one will not be drinking Coca-Cola products for a while (like they’re really going to be able to tell …). But the fact of the matter is because once this hit Google and the like for coverage, it’s (most likely) become a nightmare for the Coca-Cola reputation management team.  They’re definitely big enough to be able to just shrug it off. It’s not that big of a deal, after all there aren’t any people like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton that would take on this case for the Zetas. If the situation was reversed more-so like Jemele Hill had said above, it’d be entirely a different story – but it’s not.
